1. Homeopathy is an unproven science ?

No, Homeopathy is a proven medical science based on vast experimental pharmacological and clinical data. Homeopathy is the only medical science where data has been collected by clinical trials on human beings and not on animals because only human beings can express their actual feelings when proving selected drugs on them while the animals cannot. The Homeopathic principles are derived and authenticated by these vast clinical experiments and data, proving its efficiency, all over the world. There are more than 1400 remedies in the list of homeopathic pharmacopoeia. The process of preparation of homeopathic medicines involves a standardized procedure. Over the years homeopathic medicines have been extensively studied for their efficacy in a variety of indications.

2. Homeopathy is not evidence based.

No. Homeopathy is evidence based. The changes indicating the therapeutic recovery in the structural and functional aspects of different organs and systems of the body is a good evidence of successful homeopathic therapy. The laboratory reports taken before and after the treatment provide the relative evidence. Testimony given by the patient enjoying the recovery / cure cannot be ignored.

3. I visited a leading homeopath and took his treatment for quite some time. But there is no relief. I have lost faith in homeopathy.

Failure of one homeopathic practitioner cannot be treated as failure of Homeopathy. Selection of a right practitioner is a key factor for a successful result in Homeopathy. Homeopathy is popularly known for it’s innumerable cases of miraculous cures of various difficult diseases where other fields of medicine could not help.

4. Homeopathic doctors are quacks lacking any formal training in the field of medicine ?

No, the homeopathic degree course is an extensive study which includes the detailed and thorough study of subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Homeopathic Pharmacy, Medicine, Gynecology, Materia Medica, Philosophy, patient management etc. Postgraduate courses are also available in India. The courses are facilitated by more than 170 Government recognized homeopathic medical colleges in India and about 1000 colleges all over the world.

What is MF Hom?

“Member of Faculty of Homeopathy” (MF Hom) is the post graduate diploma in homeopathy awarded by Faculty of Homeopathy of UK. It is a prestigious homeopathic institute in the world. Only the graduates or postgraduates in modern medicine are eligible to enroll as their students for their academic course in Homeopathy. After completion of the course, one has to get registered with the Medical Council to practice homeopathy legally.

5. Does Homeopathy take long time to cure a disease ?

Usually not. The nature of the disease and the constitution of the patient decide the duration of the treatment. It is mostly the chronic and difficult cases only, when everything else has failed, that turn up for treatment at homeopathic centers, hence demand longer time. Established structural changes in the organs can delay the rate of recovery. The treatment is continued to improve the patient’s immune system. Once the patient starts improving the medicines are discontinued and the natural immunity and recovery process of the person will take care of rest of the discomfort. In fact, if a patient seeks homoeopathic treatment at the onset of the disease there are greater chances of quick recovery. In acute illnesses, the action of homoeopathic medicines is more fast.

6. What are the sources of Homeopathic remedies ?

They are highly diluted and potentised substances of usually naturally available materials from vegetable, mineral and animal kingdoms. All homeopathic remedies are prepared in homeopathic pharmaceutical industries by a special process called “ Potentization” wherein the crude medicinal substances are serially diluted and systematically shaken.

7. Homeopathic pills given for any disease look the same ?

Most of the homeopathic drugs are white and similar in their physical appearance but therapeutically they are all different dynamic medicinal substances. They are made from lactose sugar which acts as a natural vehicle or carrier of actual liquid medicines ( Tincture ) that is poured on them. The different tinctures are alcoholic preparations carrying the energy patterns of the different drugs. There are more than 1400 homeopathic medicines and 10 varying potencies (powers of medicines) of each medicine and hence a minimum of 30,000 various formulae and combinations are available.

8. How do the remedies work ?

A homeopathic remedy stimulates the body’s healing power, activating the defense systems and working at the mental, emotional and physical areas of the patient. Homeopathic remedies work as per the Law of Similars which means”like cures like” For example, when cutting an onion, one often experiences a running nose, soreness in the throat and stinging, watery eyes. A homeopath will prescribe Allium cepa (remedy made from onion) for patients who suffer from cold and a sore throat that is similar to the effect of onion. In homeopathy, only one remedy ( stimulus) is used, at a time, to cure with the minimum amount of medicine and with the minimum degree of interference. For the same reason, it is not possible to take an overdose of homeopathic remedies in the same way as in allopathy. Homeopathic remedies are not therefore intrinsically dangerous. Nonetheless, they are capable of stimulating the body’s reactive forces powerfully and should be treated with respect.

9. What do Homeopaths need to know about the patients before consultation ?

Homeopathy believes in holistic and individualistic approach to prescribe a remedy to patients. A homeopath has to understand the different causations of disease leading primarily to specific dynamic derangement that in turn can lead to alterations in physical, emotional and mental spheresof health. A homeopath needs to know all aspects of his life style including family history and history of patient’s past and present illnesses. Please give as many details as possible, because what one may think as unimportant could be of great significance to the homeopath. Initial consultations are usually long to understand every aspect of the patient’s illness and all the disclosures are treated with the strictest confidence.

10. Does homeopathic medicine contain steroids ?

Fast recovery evidenced following homeopathic treatment in certain cases has lead certain non homeopathic practitioners to develop a misconception that homeopaths give steroids. All homoeopathic medicines are prepared by predefined scientific methods of extracting the medicinal properties from natural source substances. There is no scope or need to adulterate the derived medicines with any other substances, as such a practice would completely alter its medicinal properties including destruction of its curative properties. Further the addition of steroid can present a bitter taste to the drug.

11. Why do not the homeopathic doctors disclose the name of the medicine ?

A homeopath gives different medicines with different potencies as per the demand of the presenting illness of the patient. In homeopathy, the aim is to treat the person with the disease but not the disease per se. For example,different typhoid patients may need different remedies. Hence, a homeopathic prescription is complex in nature to be understood by the patients. Also, the patient may start taking it according to his whims and fancies after he comes to know the name of the medicine. It can disturb the recovery process. If the patient wants a copy of the case record, it can be provided to the patient at the end of the treatment.

12. Do homeopathic medicines have any side effects ?

Homoeopathic medicines are highly diluted preparations obtained from natural materials and are mild in action. They are not habit forming. Generally homeopathic medicines do not give rise to any side effects if given in potencies of 30C and above. However some tinctures in low potencies like 1x or 2x may have some side effects of mild and transient nature.

13. Can a diabetic patient take homeopathic pills which are made of sugar ?

Homeopathic pills are composed of lactose that is not harmful to the diabetic patients. Further the dose taken is very minimal. Homeopathic medicines are available in liquid form too.

14. Does the patient need to follow any food restriction during treatment ?

There is no such rule to avoid any particular substance. Coffee may sometimes antidote certain homeopathic drugs. Hence it is better to avoid it while taking homeopathy. Generally, it is advised to avoid eating or drinking 15 minutes before or after taking homeopathic medication.

15. Can I take homeopathic medicines with other conventional medicines ?

Yes. Conventional medicines act at material level while the homeopathic drugs act dynamically. Hence there is no clash. However, the patient should not stop the conventional medicines abruptly but he can taper them gradually, as he starts finding improvement in his clinical picture, in consultation with the treating physician. Please do not take homeopathy for some other complaint from some other physician as that will confuse the evaluation of response.

16. Do the homeopathic medicines aggravate the symptoms initially ?

Occasionally, a few patients experience an initial mild aggravation of the symptoms. It is a transient phenomenon and indicates that the selection of the medicine is right and it has started acting. This is usually followed by gradual relief in disease symptoms.

17. Are homeopathic medicines recommended in pregnancy ?

Homoeopathic medicine are given in minute doses, hence they are very mild and harmless. Homeopathy is safe even during pregnancy or lactation.

18. Is homeopathy safe and effective in children, women and elderly ?

Yes, homeopathy is safe and effective in both sexes and in every stage of their life.

19. What is the role of homeopathy in surgical conditions ?

Surgery is a separate branch of medicine. It has to be resorted to in conditions that are beyond the domain of medicine. But one can avoid surgery, in certain cases, as homeopathy can effectively treat many so called surgical conditions like tonsillitis, piles, warts, kidney stones etc.

20. Are homeopathic medicines only sugar pills ( placebo ) ?

No. The white sugar pills as such do not have any medicinal value. But these act as vehicles or carriers for the diluted homeopathic medicines which are alcohol based and are prepared from various natural medicinal substances. Homeopathic medicines are also available in liquid form or tinctures, which can be administered directly or by diluting them with water whenever required.

21. Homeopathy is a magic remedy that can treat any disease ?

No, Homeopthy has its limitations though it can help in the cure of many difficult and incurable diseases. For example, it cannot help in diseases where surgery is unavoidable. Diseases with advanced structural pathology may not yield to treatment. One cannot dispense with supportive and nursing care for the seriously ill in a hospital. Homeopathy has to be integrated with modern medicine in such cases.

22. Is homeopathic medicine slow acting ?

It is a myth that homeopathic medicines act slowly. On the contrary, it’s action is rapid and the effect lasts longer, often forever. With most of the other medical systems, the symptoms are just palliated or suppressed while in homeopathy they are eliminated and the patient gets cured. The time taken to cure the disease depends on its chronicity.

23. What else a patient under homeopathic treatment should know ?

*Those already under homeopathic treatment should avoid that homoeopathy during any routine seasonal ailments like cold, cough, fever, diarrhea etc. He should get his acute ailment corrected first before resuming the homeopathic treatment for old problem.

*Allopathic drugs for B.P, Diabetes etc may be continued as per the suggestion of your consultant. You can take allopathic drugs from experts, whenever needed, especially when you cannot contact your regular homeopathic consultant.

* Different individuals react differently to the remedies, hence a regular feed back about the changes in health have to be given to the consultant for a suitable and timely modification of the therapy for an early and safe recovery. It is always better to contact your doctor as frequently as possible.

Chronic disease is a knotty problem and the pathway of cure is riddled with many inevitable and unforeseen obstacles at different stages, hindering the progress of recovery. One has to be prepared to face and undo the same for a safe and speedy recovery.

*Avoid taking homoeopathic drugs given by other doctor for other problem. i.e. don’t combine the homoeopathic drugs prescribed by two doctors.
